My essentials

What I keep coming back to, for my body and my hormones.

This is my cabinet.

People ask me almost every day what I take myself. So here it is, in one place: the handful of things that have earned a permanent spot in my routine. Not because they are trendy, but because I have used them for years, studied what is in them, and simply feel the difference when I stop.

I only share what I would give to my sister, my mother or the women I work with. Right now that is one brand. Over time, a few more will join, but only the ones I truly stand behind.

A note on transparency: I am an Eqology partner, and when you order through the links on this page, I earn a commission. It does not change your price, and it never changes what I recommend.

Why omega-3

The fat your cells are made of

Before I tell you about a bottle, let me tell you about your cells. Because that is where this whole story begins.

Clear fish oil capsules on a silver surface, black and white
Not all fish oil is created equal. Freshness is everything.

IYour cells are made of what you eat

Every one of your roughly 30 trillion cells is wrapped in a thin membrane made largely of fat. Which fats end up there depends, quite literally, on what you eat. The long-chain omega-3s, EPA and DHA, are built right into those membranes, and DHA is especially concentrated in your brain and the retina of your eyes.

That membrane is not just a wall. It decides how flexible a cell is, how well it receives hormonal signals, and which messengers it produces when it is under stress. Change the fats, and over time you change the conversation your cells are having.

IYour body is built from what you eat

Your body is made of tiny building blocks called cells. Each cell has a thin outer layer, a bit like a soap bubble, and that layer is made of fat.

The fats you eat literally become that layer. Omega-3 is one of the best fats for it: it keeps your cells soft and flexible, so they can “hear” your hormones well. The two most important omega-3s are called EPA and DHA, and you mostly find them in fatty fish. Your brain and eyes love them.

IIThe balance we lost

Omega-6 and omega-3 are both essential: your body cannot make them, so they have to come from food. The problem is not omega-6 itself, it is the balance. Our ancestors ate them in a ratio of roughly 1:1 to 4:1. In a modern Western diet, rich in seed oils and processed food, that ratio often climbs to 15:1 or even 20:1.1

Why does that matter? From omega-6 linoleic acid, your body makes arachidonic acid, the starting point for messengers that switch inflammation on. From EPA and DHA, it makes messengers that help switch it off again, the so-called resolvins and protectins.2 Inflammation in itself is healthy and necessary. But when the scale tips that far towards omega-6, the “off switch” has very little to work with.

IIA gas pedal and a brake

Your body needs two families of fats it cannot make itself: omega-6 and omega-3. Think of them as a gas pedal and a brake for inflammation, your body’s repair and defence reaction. Short bursts are healthy. When it never switches off, you feel it.

Omega-6 (in sunflower oil, other seed oils and lots of processed food) presses the gas. Omega-3 helps you brake. We used to eat about as much of both. Today we often eat 15 to 20 times more omega-6. Lots of gas, very little brake.

IIIWhy change takes time

This is the part nobody tells you: omega-3 is not a quick fix. A red blood cell lives about 120 days, which is why the omega-3 index in your blood takes three to four months to truly reflect what you have been taking.3 Your fat tissue turns over even more slowly: its fatty acid profile reflects what you have eaten over the past one to two years.4

So you are not changing a number on a lab report in a week. You are slowly rebuilding the structure of your body, cell by cell. That is exactly why consistency matters more than any single dose.

IIIPatience pays off

Your body renews itself slowly. A red blood cell lives about four months, so it takes three to four months before a blood test shows that you have been taking omega-3.

Your fat tissue changes even more slowly, over one to two years. So it is not about one bottle. It is about a little bit, every single day.

IVWhen fish oil does the opposite

Omega-3s are beautiful, and fragile. Those same flexible double bonds that make them so valuable also make them oxidise easily, through heat, light and air. And an oxidised oil is not just less useful: in lab and animal studies, its breakdown products can stress the very cells you were trying to support. Research on human health is still limited, but I would rather not find out.

Analyses of supplements on the shelf found that a large share of fish oil capsules exceeded the recommended limits for oxidation.5 And here is the catch with capsules: you cannot smell or taste whether the oil inside is fresh. The gelatine hides it.

IVFish oil can go off

Omega-3 is fragile. Just like a cut apple turns brown in the air, fish oil can go off when it meets heat, light and oxygen. That is called oxidation.

Oil that has gone off is not only useless, it may even stress your cells. And with capsules you cannot smell or taste whether the oil inside is still fresh. That is why freshness matters so much.

VWhy I chose Eqology

Eqology’s oil comes from fresh, wild Arctic cod, caught sustainably and processed quickly. Then comes the part I love most: it is blended with organic, cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil. Olive oil is naturally rich in polyphenols, antioxidants that help protect the delicate omega-3s from oxidation, so the oil stays remarkably fresh. The omega-3s are in their natural triglyceride form, the way they occur in fish.

And you can taste it. It is liquid, it is fresh, and it tastes of lemon, not of fish. That, to me, is the honest test of any fish oil. They also offer a simple at-home blood test, so you can see your own omega-6 to omega-3 balance before you start and again a few months later. No guessing, just your own numbers.

VWhy I chose Eqology

Eqology’s oil comes from wild fish from the cold Arctic sea. They add extra virgin olive oil, which is full of natural protectors (antioxidants) that keep the fish oil fresh.

And you can taste it: fresh and lemony, not fishy at all. You can even do a small test at home to see your own omega balance before you start, and again a few months later.

How I take it

A generous tablespoon

Every morning I take a generous tablespoon of Pure Arctic Oil, usually around 20 ml, sometimes 10. Straight from the spoon, it tastes fresh and lemony.

Why liquid? Because of the amount. Ten millilitres already gives about 1,420 mg of EPA and DHA. A standard fish oil capsule contains roughly 300 mg, so to get the same from capsules you would need a whole handful.

10 ml≈ 5 capsules
20 ml≈ 10 capsules

Compared with a standard 1,000 mg fish oil capsule containing about 300 mg EPA + DHA. Eqology’s own advice is 0.15 ml per kilo of body weight.

Slow and steady

Why I recommend a subscription

Remember those red blood cells that take four months to renew? This is not something you buy once and judge after two weeks. It is something you build into your days, like brushing your teeth. I have taken my omega-3 for years now, and it has become a non-negotiable in my routine.

A subscription makes that easy: it arrives on its own, you never run out, and it costs less. And when you look at it per day, it is suddenly not that much at all.

From the research

Omega-3 in studies

A few studies from my science library. Including the one that reminds us omega-3 is not a magic shield.

Nutrition · Snipe et al., Nutr Diet, 2024

Omega-3 eases period pain

What they foundAcross 12 studies with 881 women, omega-3 at 300 to 1,800 mg a day for two to three months had a large effect on period pain, and most studies found that women needed fewer painkillers.

Why it mattersPeriod pain is common, but that doesn't mean it's normal to just endure it. Omega-3s calm the inflammation behind the cramps.

Nutrition · Yang et al., Reprod Biol Endocrinol, 2018

Omega-3 improves insulin resistance in PCOS

What they foundThis meta-analysis of 9 trials with 591 women with PCOS found that omega-3 improved insulin resistance and lowered cholesterol and triglycerides. It had no significant effect on testosterone.

Why it mattersInsulin is often the root of PCOS. Supporting it with good fats is a gentle piece of the bigger puzzle.

Nutrition · Liao et al., Transl Psychiatry, 2019

Omega-3, especially EPA, supports mood

What they foundIn 26 trials with 2,160 people with depression, omega-3s improved symptoms. Formulas with at least 60% EPA, at a dose of 1 gram a day or less, worked best.

Why it mattersYour brain is largely made of fat. Feeding it well is part of caring for your mental health, alongside professional support.

Nutrition · Manson et al., N Engl J Med, 2019

A fish oil pill is not a magic shield

What they foundIn the VITAL trial, about 26,000 healthy adults (half of them women) took 1 gram of fish oil or a placebo for five years. Fish oil did not lower the overall risk of major heart events or cancer, although heart attacks were less common.

Why it mattersI love honest science. Supplements support a healthy lifestyle, they don't replace it. Real food first.
