Essentials

My essentials

What I keep coming back to, for my body and my hormones.

This is my cabinet.

People ask me almost every day what I use myself. So here it is, in one place: the handful of things that have earned a permanent spot in my routine. Not because they are trendy, but because I have used them for years, studied what is in them, and simply feel the difference when I stop.

I only share what I would give to my sister, my mother or the women I work with. Right now that is three brands: Eqology for my daily omega-3, Elvou for what touches my body and my home, and Modern Native for the nutrient-dense whole foods our ancestors ate. Over time, a few more may join, but only the ones I truly stand behind.

A note on transparency: I work with Eqology, Elvou and Modern Native, and when you order through the links on this page, I may earn a commission. It does not change your price, and it never changes what I recommend.

No. 3Modern Native
Why nose to tail

What our ancestors ate first

For most of human history, the most prized part of an animal was not the steak. It was the liver, the heart, the marrow. Modern Native brings that forgotten wisdom back, in a capsule.

IThe most nutrient-dense food on the planet

Traditional cultures across the world ate the whole animal, and often the organs first. They had a point. When researchers ranked foods by how many of the micronutrients we most often fall short on they deliver per bite, organ meats such as liver came out at the very top, together with small fish and shellfish.1

Liver is one of nature’s richest sources of vitamin B12, retinol (the active form of vitamin A), copper, folate and heme iron. Those nutrients are exactly what a menstruating body keeps spending: in a recent study, four in ten young women had iron deficiency.2 Muscle meat, the part we eat almost exclusively today, simply contains far less of all of this.

IThe most nutrient-dense food on the planet

Long ago, people ate the whole animal, and the organs were the treasure. The liver, the heart: they went to the people who needed them most.

And they were right. Liver is packed with things a woman who bleeds every month needs: iron, vitamin B12, vitamin A. Today we mostly eat the muscle, the steak, which has much less of all that. Lots of young women are low on iron without knowing it.

IILike supports like: tradition and science

Behind Powervrouw lies an old idea: that eating an organ supports the same organ in you. Bovine uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes were valued in many traditions for a woman’s cycle and fertility. I want to be honest here: that specific “like supports like” effect has hardly been studied in humans.

What is solid is the nutrient profile. Six capsules give about 250% of your daily vitamin B12, your full copper requirement and close to your daily vitamin A, together with riboflavin and selenium. Reproductive tissue also naturally contains small amounts of hormones and signalling proteins. That is precisely why Modern Native itself advises against combining it with hormonal contraception or hormone-sensitive conditions.

IILike supports like: tradition and science

There is an old belief that eating an organ helps the same organ in your own body. That is where Powervrouw comes from: it contains the female organs of a cow, plus liver.

Is that belief proven? Not really. But what is in it is: lots of vitamin B12, vitamin A and copper. And because these organs naturally contain a tiny bit of hormones, the brand itself says: don’t take it with the pill or with a hormone-sensitive condition.

IIIColostrum, the very first milk

Colostrum is the thick, golden milk a cow makes in the first hours after giving birth. It is designed to build a newborn’s immune system and gut from zero, which is why it is so rich in immunoglobulins (antibodies such as IgG), lactoferrin and growth factors.

In a study with athletes, bovine colostrum strongly reduced the rise in gut permeability that heavy exercise normally causes.3 Your gut lining is the border between your food and your bloodstream, so keeping it tight matters for inflammation, for immunity, and for how you feel in your skin. Modern Native only uses colostrum from the first twelve hours, after the calf has had its share.

IIIColostrum, the very first milk

Colostrum is the very first milk a cow makes after her calf is born. It is thick, golden and full of things that protect: antibodies and building blocks for a strong gut.

Your gut is like a wall between your food and your blood. Colostrum seems to help keep that wall strong. Modern Native only takes it after the calf has had enough.

IVSmall minerals, big roles

Oysters are the richest natural source of zinc there is. Zinc is involved at nearly every step of female reproduction, from the maturation of the egg to ovulation itself,4 and it contributes to normal fertility, to the maintenance of normal skin, hair and nails, and to the protection of cells against oxidative stress. Oysters bring copper, selenium, iodine and B12 in their natural balance alongside it.

Then iron and vitamin C, a classic duo: vitamin C markedly increases how much iron you absorb from your food.5 Their natural vitamin C combines acerola cherry with bovine spleen, a source of heme iron. And magnesium oil, sprayed on the skin, is an easy evening ritual for many women. Honesty again: how much magnesium is absorbed through the skin is still being debated by scientists,6 so I see it as a lovely addition, not a replacement for magnesium-rich food.

IVSmall minerals, big roles

Oysters are full of zinc, the mineral your body uses to ovulate, to keep your skin, hair and nails healthy, and to protect your cells. Nothing else in nature has as much.

Vitamin C helps you absorb iron from your food, so that is a good team. And magnesium oil is something you spray on your skin in the evening. Scientists don’t yet agree on how much your skin takes in, so see it as a nice extra.

VWhy I chose Modern Native

Modern Native started in a converted bedroom, with organs collected straight from Dutch farmers. Their cattle graze on Dutch grassland with partners such as Zorg & Natuur in Friesland, without pesticides, hormones or antibiotics. The oysters grow on oyster tables in the Oosterschelde, still following the tides.

Everything is freeze-dried, which keeps far more of the delicate nutrients intact than heat drying. The capsules contain the organ and a gelatin shell, nothing else, and they are packed in glass jars that never let them touch plastic. Their motto says it all: add what is missing in the modern world.

VWhy I chose Modern Native

Modern Native began in someone’s bedroom, with organs fetched straight from Dutch farms. The cows graze outside on Dutch grass, without hormones or antibiotics, and the oysters come from Zeeland.

They freeze-dry everything, which keeps the good stuff inside. In each capsule there is only the organ, nothing added, in a glass jar. Simple and pure, the way it used to be.

Minerals in studies

Two studies from my science library about the minerals so many women run low on.

Iron · Weyand et al., JAMA, 2023

Four in ten young women are iron deficient

What they foundAmong 3,490 US girls and young women aged 12 to 21, 39% were iron deficient (ferritin below 25 µg/L) and 6% had iron-deficiency anaemia. Even 27% of girls who hadn't started menstruating already had low iron stores.

Why it mattersFatigue, hair loss or heavy periods are often brushed aside, while a simple blood test including ferritin can explain a lot. Ask for it, especially if you eat little meat or bleed heavily.

Blood sugar · Veronese et al., Eur J Clin Nutr, 2016

Magnesium supports glucose balance

What they foundThis meta-analysis of 18 double-blind trials found that magnesium lowered fasting glucose in people with diabetes and improved glucose levels after a sugar test in people at high risk.

Why it mattersSo many women are low in magnesium. Leafy greens, nuts, seeds and cacao are wonderful sources.
